Doug Johnston

Doug Johnston is a trial lawyer with a practice focused on civil litigation, including medical malpractice, personal injury, and employment litigation. Doug has also handled many significant securities class action and derivative matters, in actions alleging corporate malfeasance and fraud on the market.

In 2016, Doug tried two cases to successful jury verdicts. In federal court in Nashville, Doug obtained a jury verdict of more than $320,000, including punitive damages, on behalf of his client whose employment was terminated in retaliation for exercising her rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. In another 2016 trial, Doug obtained the largest jury verdict of any kind in over a decade in Coffee County, Tennessee – a $625,000 gross verdict for his client whom the jury found had been overly prescribed opioids by his doctor.

Additionally, Doug devotes considerable time to civil rights causes. In recent years, Doug has led litigation to challenge voter identification legislation aimed at disenfranchising voters. Doug has also served as a volunteer to help the International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency that rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, slavery, and oppression.

In early 2017, Doug was elected to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), a prestigious national organization dedicated to preserving the right to a civil jury trial as guaranteed by the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Prior to private law practice, Doug served as an Assistant District Attorney General in Nashville. He also served as Legal Counsel and Administrative Assistant (Chief of Staff) to Congressman Bill Boner, as well as Associate Staff on the Committee on Appropriations in the U.S. House of Representatives.
