The Justice Department announced an action to stop two Tennessee pharmacies, their owner, and three pharmacists from dispensing controlled substance medications, including powerful opioids that have been linked to abuse and diversion.
The pharmacies’ owner and the pharmacists were dispensing, and billing Medicare, for prescriptions in violation of the False Claims Act. The pharmacy continued to fill prescriptions for opioids while ignoring “red flags” or warning signs of abuse, such as unusually high dosages or dangerous combinations of prescriptions. The unlawful dispensing of opioids has been tied to the deaths of at least two people, and numerous other have been treated at hospitals for serious overdoses.
