According to a new Bloomberg Law analysis, health-care fraud netted $2.5 billion for federal enforcers from 2017-2018. The health-care industry accounted for almost 90 percent of the government’s False Claims Act recoveries.
The report found that physicians, hospitals and clinics most frequently violated False Claims Act provisions that involved billing Medicare and Medicaid for services that were medically unnecessary or for services and medications that were not administrated. Another common violation was engaging in kickback schemes.
The largest settlement in 2017-2018 was against DaVita– the nation’s largest dialysis provider- at $270 million.
Under the qui tam provision of the False Claims Act, whistleblowers can expose fraud and share in the government’s recovery.
